  1. For me it would be Jorge Luis Borges the Argentinian author who never wrote a novel (that I am aware of). He was an extremely literate author who had several books of short stories. He dealt with truth and fiction melted together to purposely fool the reader. Borges always had something up his sleeve when he wrote. Most of his work had a little wry humor in it and at other times he was serious (but never ill-spirited). I remember one piece where he actually led into the story by giving several citations to let his readers know where the story was going and who had actually preceeded him in writing about the story. We, the readers, found out that all the citations were false. He actually told us they were false but not ourrightly. He even hid his apology by using another literal trick. He was amazing. To this day I still keep several of his books handy if I need a little spark to get me writing. I just pick up any of them and open to any page and there is an enjoyable story.
